The Providence Horse Guards were a pre Civil War Rhode Island Militia unit. Many of these men formed the nucleus of the First Rhode Island Cavalry, which served with great distinction during the Civil War. The button is in great shape and was stamped a bit off of the center, so the letters of PROVIDENCE are partially off of the button. The back of the button is well stamped with R.&W. ROBINSON EXTRA RICH
